Elite butcher S Collins & Son based in Muirhead are putting their products to the test in the 2013 Smithfield Awards, an annual national product evaluation event contested by Q Guild butchers. 

Almost 400 individual products from Q Guild butchers nationwide have been entered for this year’s high profile showcase, in which there are seven product categories – sausages, burgers, pies, cooked meats, kitchen-ready and chipolata sausages. 

S Collins & Son, from Muirhead, has put eight products in front of the judges – Low Fat Links, Ultimate Burger, Family Steak Pie, Bombay Chicken, Southern Smokey Chicken, Chilli Con Carne, Spicy Meatballs and Traditional Pork Chipolata. 

Judging by panels of food and meat industry enthusiasts took place at the City of Glasgow College earlier this month (Oct) and awards will be announced and presented at the Butchers Hall in Smithfield, London, on Wednesday, November 20, by celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli. 

Gold and silver awards will be handed out in each class, with diamond awards going to individual product category winners, one of whom will emerge as the overall Smithfield Awards supreme champion. 

Product innovation is a key activity in the Q Guild, which is based in Perth and whose 110 members across Britain are at the elite end of the retail butchery sector. 

Q Guild chairman Brindon Addy said: “The Smithfield Awards present an opportunity for our members to put their products to the test and win one of the meat industry’s most prized accolades.”
